Field guide // community relaunches

What does CTO mean in crypto?

A community takeover, often shortened to CTO, happens when holders continue a crypto project after its original creator leaves, abandons it, or loses the community's trust. The community takes over communication, coordination, and promotion—but not ownership of the blockchain contract.

01 // How it works

The community takes the wheel

Holders may create new official channels, rebuild the website, organize artwork and events, and make the project's history easier to verify. A CTO does not erase what happened before it, reverse losses, or guarantee that the token will succeed.

02 // SantaMoon case study

Same coin. New hands.

SantaMoon's original developer rugged the project and disappeared. Holders are relaunching the community around the existing $SXM contract instead of pretending that history never happened. The relaunch is community-steered, and the original developer is not affiliated with it.

03 // What to verify

Trust evidence, not momentum

The original contract address is published and easy to verify.

The previous developer's exit is disclosed instead of rewritten.
